Global Trends in DPF-Related Emissions Regulations
With governments taking a proactive approach to cleaner air, more countries are introducing emissions regulations, especially for the automotive industry. These regulations aim to progressively decrease the volume of harmful gases being released into the atmosphere, causing environmental damage and health concerns.
Some governments appear to be further ahead than others, but with growing international pressure, stricter regulations are being introduced.

Europe: Euro 7 Emissions Regulations
The European Union is still at the forefront of the movement, with the current regulations being defined by Euro 7. The passenger vehicle section of Euro 7 is already in motion, however the commencement date for the commercial vehicle specifications has been pushed back multiple times due to opposition from manufacturers claiming that the proposed timeline is unrealistic.
Euro 7 not only implements stricter limits on output of emissions but also introduces measures for other areas of the vehicle not previously covered, limits on new pollutants not previously covered and new testing methods:
- Brakes
- Tyres
- Batteries for electric vehicles
- Real-driving emissions (RDE)
- Limits for Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
- Limits for Ammonia (NH2)
China: China VI / VII
China has seen some of the toughest regulations, with standards as demanding as Euro 6. These standards were released in two phases, labelled VI-a and VI-b, to give manufacturers the best possible chance of meeting the demanding legislations to the desired timeline.
China VI focuses on removing harmful gases from the exhaust system;
- Particulate matter (PM) and soot
- Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
- Hydrocarbons (HC)
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
The use of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF’s) also became a mandatory requirement to aid with removing harmful gases and soot.
China VII will build upon these regulations, introducing stricter objectives to reduce emissions. Although the latest legislation is still in draft, China aims to begin implementation in late 2026, likely starting with smaller passenger vehicles before rolling out to commercial.
India: Bharat Stage VI
India made an interesting move, leapfrogging from Stage IV to VI in order to meet the benchmark emissions regulations set out by Euro 6. Inda’s interesting decision to skip Stage V was met with strong objections from vehicle manufacturers claiming that the demands expected them to achieve in three years what other countries had implemented in several stages.
Depending on the vehicle, manufacturers were facing the need to integrate technologies including:
- DPF for particulate emissions
- SCR for NOx
- DOC
- NOx and temperature sensors
- More sophisticated engine controls
- More advanced diagnostics
Industry representatives argued that introducing DPF and SCR simultaneously made development and fault diagnosis considerably more complicated.
The next set of emissions regulations for India will focus on effective monitoring and testing, ensuring that standards are sustainable in real world situations with India’s driving conditions.
North and South America: EPA 10 and Euro 6
Where Northern America and Canada have typically followed guidelines for EPA10, Southern America have begun adopting approaches closer to that of the Euro 6 regulations or a mixture of both.
Interestingly, California have developed their own set of emissions regulations, building upon the EPA10 guidelines. Issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), these standards have stricter limits on NOx output. CARB aims to reduce photochemical smog by reducing air pollutants, and other states with similar environmental issues have adopted their high standards.
Despite the slightly differing approaches, the aim of both Noth and South America is to ensure that vehicles remain compliant throughout its entire lifetime, rather than just passing initial testing.
The EPA’s 2027 emissions regulations will implement:
- Stricter NOx limitations.
- Longer useful life of vehicles: engines must maintain emissions compliance for a significantly longer period of the vehicle’s operative lifetime.
- Extended warranty periods: manufacturers must maintain responsibility for the functioning of emissions-based systems for longer.
- Broader real-world testing: Compliance must be demonstrated across a wider range of temperatures, loads, speeds, and duty cycles.
Emissions Regulations in The Digital Era
The general trend for emissions regulations across the world is a shift towards digitalisation, with a strong focus on monitoring and testing equipment developments.
Modern legislation increasingly requires:
- Continuous onboard diagnostics that detect DPF deterioration
- Real-world emissions monitoring rather than laboratory-only validation
- Detection of tampering or filter removal
- Longer warranty and durability expectations for emissions systems
For fleets, this means preventative maintenance and emissions diagnostics are becoming just as important as the hardware itself.
Although the research for a renewable energy source continues for the commercial vehicle industry, it appears that Diesel Particulate Filters will still be around for some time.
